THE CLEAR AND PARTICIPATED WITNESS OF THE BATTLE OF BRESCIA (AND ITS HEALTHCARE) AGAINST COVID-19
Brescia , March 2020. Michele Aiello introduces us to the city hospital to show us from the inside what is happening within the walls of a place where we try to save those who have been severely hit by Covid by facing the pandemic with professionalism and humanity.
Presented at the Nyon Documentary Festival and at the Biografilm Festival in Bologna, Aiello’s film is now added to the already numerous documentaries that dealt with the most serious moments of the pandemic.
This, together with the fact that the sense of overdose from information on Covid is now pervading everyone, risks penalizing it when it comes out in the room. In September 2021 a documentary like his could end up becoming of focal interest for those who lived the unfortunate experience on site (i.e. in Brescia) or as a document to be delivered to the historical-social archives to reflect in the future on what happened in the 2020 in Italy and in the world and on how we worked to combat the pandemic.
Nonetheless, the undoubted qualities of a work that has taken risks, also in terms of the narrative structure, with the awareness of the method to overcome them. Because Aiello decides not to use either narrating voice or one or more characters or situations to which to entrust the role of fil rouge.
His documentary is configured as a collection of scenes not connected to each other except for the fact that they take place within the same place: the hospital. It thus becomes the only film that is placed inside a health facility showing the relationship between doctors and nurses and patients from the most diverse angles. The only one able to try to make up for the isolation (even for long periods) of people affected by the virus.
The camera becomes almost invisible in following the activities of health workers, both in meetings and in moments of high tension. Often it is the window panes that constitute a barrier beyond which there are those who suffer and on the other hand those who seek, with a word or a suggestion, to alleviate their suffering.
Aiello and his operator take on the role of witnesses in a path that no script could establish a priori because it was the enemy to fight that dictated the sequences: the virus. They do it with clarity but also with participation.
