In the 1980s, under the regime of Nicolae Ceausescu, Romanians suffered from poor access to foreign goods as well as an information blackout, as Communist bureaucrats had to guarantee ideological purity.

However, thanks to the smuggling of dubbed VHS, people managed to get a taste of the Western world and movie heroes like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris.
