«Il jazz si trasforma.

Musica meticcia per definizione, il jazz oggi abbraccia uno spettro di musiche amplissimo, che dopo più di un secolo conserva tratti di continuità ma anche incessanti mutazioni, come un fiume che dilaga, si mescola ad altri corsi, perde la sua forma e ne crea di inedite. Questa musica che scorre e si dirama verso altre terre feconda nuovi stili e linguaggi, a volte ne diventa un ingrediente, un colore decisivo, e ispira l’immaginazione di altre culture. Nonostante gli accademismi che talvolta provano a frenarlo, quello che ci ostiniamo a chiamare “jazz” si ostina a sfuggire ad ogni definizione.

Il Torino Jazz Festival è un viaggio in questa realtà multiforme, da un punto di vista speciale: quello di una città musicalmente vivacissima, forte di una tradizione jazzistica lunga quasi quanto la storia stessa del jazz. Dunque questa edizione è al tempo stesso l’occasione per produrre nuova musica, per godersi le grandi stelle e sorprendersi con gli artisti che conosciamo meno, per riconoscere la storia e indovinare il rinnovamento, per stupirsi della varietà di stili e suoni. È anche l’occasione per ricordare che un grande festival produce non solo cultura ma anche valori: quelli della pace, che vive nell’eredità di Alice Coltrane; della musica accessibile a tutti, anche nei luoghi meno in vista della città; della formazione, che nutre il nostro futuro; e su tutti della creatività diffusa, che migliora la vita di tutti.»

“Jazz is transformed.

A mestizo music by definition, jazz today encompasses a very broad spectrum of musics, which after more than a century retains traits of continuity but also incessant mutations, like a river that runs rampant, mixes with other streams, loses its form and creates new ones. This music that flows and branches out to other lands fertilizes new styles and languages, sometimes becomes an ingredient, a decisive color, and inspires the imagination of other cultures. Despite the academisms that sometimes try to curb it, what we insist on calling “jazz” stubbornly eludes any definition.

The Torino Jazz Festival is a journey into this multifaceted reality from a special point of view: that of a musically vibrant city, strong with a jazz tradition almost as long as the history of jazz itself. So this edition is both an opportunity to produce new music, to enjoy the big stars and surprise ourselves with artists we know less, to recognize history and guess at renewal, to marvel at the variety of styles and sounds. It is also an opportunity to remember that a great festival produces not only culture but also values: those of peace, which lives on in the legacy of Alice Coltrane; of music that is accessible to all, even in the city’s less prominent places; of education, which nurtures our future; and over all of widespread creativity, which improves everyone’s lives.”
